About the Course

Maybe you’ve just finished the 8 Week class and you’ve got the basics down pat.  You even have a SHOW under your belt! Where do you go from there? You advance … to Advanced Improv! Or, maybe you’ve been improvising for a while and find you’ve hit a plateau and feel like you need a little refresher. Where can you find something like that? You advance … to Advanced Improv! 

In this class you will grow in creativity, risk-taking, and confidence. You will put the joy, laughter, and playfulness at the heart of what we’re doing into practice. You will fully advance from improv as an individual to improv in conjunction with others The skills we will teach in this class include:

  • Avoiding self-judgment

  • Consent

  • Developing point of view

  • Forming alliances

  • Learning how and when to pivot, shift

  • Heightening

  • Fully listening, fully responding

  • Providing support (both onstage and off)

  • Using more than just words — also body, face, action

  • Subtext

  • Character

  • Adding

We have tailored our curriculum carefully to make sure it’s relevant and fun for experienced players. If you’re looking to take your improvisation to the next level and be challenged in a fun, safe, supportive environment, you’ll find our Advanced Improv Class exciting and affordable.

(PLEASE NOTE: This class is for improvisers ages 18 and up. To perform in the graduation show, you must attend 6 out of the 8 classes. Westside Improv reserves the right to cancel class if enrollment fails to reach the minimum number of students necessary.)

Prerequisite:  Intro to Improv (8 Week Class) or equivalent

The Teachers

Josh has been improvising since high school, and teaching theater and improv since 2012. As an improv teacher and coach, he enjoys working with improvisers and troupes of all types, experience levels, and backgrounds, and has worked with both new and long-established teams. He’s a graduate of the Second City Conservatory, and previously performed with One Group Mind in Chicago.

Caleb Sjogren has been in the improv game since 1997. He has played corporate gigs, touring shows, and experimental improv–both short and long form–in venues ranging from Piper’s Alley in Chicago to church camps, from comedy cabarets to the county farm barn. Caleb is a graduate of the Second City Conservatory (Chicago) in addition to training with iO and Under the Gun.
