Tonight I Am My Mother is a dark comedy character piece written and performed by veteran performer and improv coach Liz Allen. Delving into the complex mother/daughter dynamic, Liz brings forth her mother, a charming southern woman from the coast of North Carolina. Liz’s mother sought refuge in country club parties while grappling with booze, a faulty husband, and her own bleak childhood. Liz recalls when she and her siblings returned home to North Carolina as adults to solve a long-ignored family problem. What followed were unexpected fissures and twists that forced Liz to reconsider Oprah's teachings, improv, and the wisdom of squirrels.

(No foul language; mature themes abound.)

Liz Allen has performed and coached improv for over 30 years as a performer with the IO Chicago Theater (formerly Improv Olympic). A revered coach, the theater created The Liz Allen Excellence in Teaching Award. Today Liz coaches improv to actors, professionals and corporations. In recent years, Liz began scripting solo pieces via storytelling and stand-up, with the goal to capture her childhood experiences. The result is Tonight I Am My Mother, which Liz is honored to bring to Westside Improv Studio in Wheaton.
