Film Bootcamp

$350.00

Saturday Afternoon Starting May 9, 2026
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
May 9 - June 27

Join award-winning filmmaker and Westside Improv member Mason Bendewald for an 8-week, hands-on film bootcamp where improvisers and writers turn ideas into produced short films.

The program culminates in a special Westside Film Festival screening — where your work will premiere for a live audience!

*No film experience required. Writing and/or sketch experience is a plus.

This is not just a two-hour class. Production teams will need to meet outside regular class times to complete the films.

What You’ll Learn

This class is intentionally low-tech and performance-first — because story and ensemble come before gear.

You’ll Learn:

  • Cinematic storytelling fundamentals

  • Camera and sound basics (smartphone or DSLR)

  • Visual coverage and shot choices

  • Production roles and on-set collaboration

  • Directing actors for film

  • Editing essentials

Each session includes a focused lesson, hands-on shooting, and group feedback.

The Final Project

Participants are divided into four production teams.

Each team draws a genre:
• Mockumentary

• Workplace Comedy
• Crime Parody
• Relationship Satire

From concept to script to shoot to edit, you’ll create a finished short film.

About the Instructor Mason Bendewald

Mason Bendewald has been working in the arts since the 1980s — as an actor, director, writer, and producer. He graduated from New York’s High School of Performing Arts (the “FAME” school), where his love of ensemble storytelling first took root. In his twenties, he began producing and directing theater and independent projects, eventually founding his production company, Mega Mace, in 1995.

Over the past three decades, Mason has directed hundreds of productions — from independent films and documentaries to large-scale commercial projects, including record-breaking programs like P90X. While his career has spanned many formats, the throughline has always been collaboration and story.

He recently earned his MFA in Film from Vermont College of Fine Arts, deepening his focus on character-driven, socially relevant narratives. His short film The Machine explores identity and dialogue in a high school setting and has screened in community and educational spaces to spark meaningful conversation.

Mason is excited to bring his filmmaking experience to the Westside community — not as an improv expert, but as a fellow artist eager to build something together. He’s grateful to contribute to a space that nurtures creativity and looks forward to helping performers translate their live brilliance into cinematic storytelling.
